The Future of Home Automation

Posted by Anonymous | Posted in , , | Posted on 2:43 PM

Imagine a world in which as soon as you enter your home, the house recognizes you, knows your preferences and acts accordingly. Perhaps the house senses that you are tired and turns down the lights to help you relax. Maybe your favorite music comes on when you enter your bedroom or the coffeemaker turns on when you wake up. With the arrival of the Kinect from Microsoft, these ideas may eventually become a reality for homeowners.
The Kinect is a gaming device for the Xbox that enables video game users to control the game without the use of a hand-held device. It can detect movements, perceive depth and even use facial recognition software to identify the user. Using infrared lights, which are invisible to the human eye, the device can track the human body in real time. The Kinect is also equipped with multi-array microphone software and is therefore capable of voice recognition and response to commands.
What does this mean for the home automation industry? It means that that a new era of home automation is just beginning and the possibilities are subject to interpretation.
As of today, HAI Automation Systems and Lutron Controlled Lighting Systems are operated via touchscreens or buttons. It is possible that in the future, all of the automated systems we use in the home could respond to a homeowner’s needs based on sensory to motion, temperature, voice or even facial expressions. Most security systems are operated with codes that only the homeowner knows. Facial recognition software could eliminate the need for entering a password or preventing an unauthorized person who may know the code to enter the home.
The Kinect also has a chat feature which allows Xbox Live users to communicate with each other without the use of headsets or any additional hardware. This could make it possible to talk on a telephone anywhere in the home, eliminating the need for devices such as phones or intercoms.
Technology continues to advance rapidly and new uses are being realized every day. Right now, video gamers are enjoying this recent development but soon anyone who owns a home may be able to benefit from these innovations.

CCTV Security Surveillance & GreenBuildingsNY

Posted by Blognut | Posted in | Posted on 6:52 AM

Well, the BuildingsNY/GreenBuildingsNY show this year was a terrific success!
We interacted with more consumers and colleagues than ever. It was very encouraging to meet so many people excited about sustainable energy solutions for buildings and homes.
At our booth, we were happy to talk to visitors about our home automation systems, access control security systems, cctv security surveillance, home theater installations, and audio distribution systems. There are many experts in attendance at the trade show, so yes, it was a lot of shop talk, but we also had the chance to chat with people less familiar with, say, cctv security surveillance, and it was a real pleasure to share what we have to offer with them.
If we met you at the Javits Center, thanks so much for stopping by, or hosting us as we made our rounds, checking everything out. If you learned a little something more about cctv security surveillance, we’re happy. We’re happy in any case, and look forward to GreenBuildingsNY 2011. See you next March!

What Makes Biometric Access Control Security Systems So Secure?

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , , , , | Posted on 6:19 PM

Biometric access control security systems, are often overlooked but are incredibly useful in keeping your business or residence totally safeguarded. This is primarily because biometric security systems employ some of the most cutting edge technology to date. Here is a little more information about Biometrics:
What Makes Biometrics Secure?:
-Biometric systems have been developed around unique characteristics of the individuals who have been granted access. The probability of 2 people sharing the same biometric data is virtually impossible.
-Unlike traditional security systems, access can’t be shared because a biometric property is an intrinsic property of an individual. Being that you can’t give someone a copy of your face or handprint, especially with new technologies that ensure the biometric data is authentic, unwanted access is nearly impossible.
-Unlike a key or even an access card, a person’s biometric property can’t be lost, unless the person is in a serious accident.
If you are interested in safeguarding your home or business with biometric access control security systems, contact a Mezuri systems representative for more information. Mezuri Systems is the NY Tri-state’s leader in residential and commercial security systems, and only a leader in the field like Mezuri Systems has the expertise to properly install and configure an advanced system like a Biometric access control system.

CCTV Security Surveillance Is a Must For Modern Businesses

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , , , | Posted on 10:27 AM

Modern businesses have many expenses and one of them shouldn’t be inventory loss. In the past it would be common for businesses to emply a 24 security guard, while on the street local police walked their “beats” every night providing business owners with extra peace of mind that their investments would be safe. Nowadays, however, few police departments can afford to staff beat walking officers and additionally, few business owners have the funds necessary to have a guard on staff 24 hours a day.

So what’s the solution? CCTV security surveillance. The advances in the CCTV security surveillance system has made it the affordable option for nearly every business owner. In fact, many police departments have been employing CCTV security to assist in monitoring activities. Specifically, London has the largest number of security cameras per square foot of any city in the world. The system was responsible for identifying the people involved in the 2005 subway bombings.

If you think it’s time to equip your business with the latest and greatest security measure, contact a Mezuri Systems representative today.

Do CCTV Camera Systems Work?

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , , , | Posted on 9:18 PM

CCTV camera systems over the years have captured some defining moments in history. From the last images of the crew of the Challenger to the terrible images of 9/11, CCTV camera systems have been our silent witnesses to moments in modern history that can never be forgotten.

The question remains, however, if using CCTV camera systems is really worth it when it comes to documenting criminal activity. Of late, this question has been hotly debated in terms of civil rights and the effectiveness when it comes to evidence in criminal trials. There are statistics that support claims that the effectiveness of CCTV camera systems is lost when their presence is proven to not be very effective in reducing crimes in designated areas. On the other hand, however, there is also data that proves that a significant presence of CCTV camera systems curbs criminal activities and assists the local authorities in securing evidence for prosecutions and trials.

The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle of these arguments, carrying the weight of documented history that CCTV camera systems are not only effective in the solving of criminal cases, but are also a great asset for preventing the crimes from happening in the first place.

CCTV camera systems have always been more concerned with deterrence than with evidence collection. Red light cameras do catch drivers in the act of running red lights, but the reason they are there is not to simply increase the coffers of the city they are installed in. They are supposed to be making drivers think twice before breaking the law, since it has been well publicized that any driver caught will be paying some hefty fines.

CCTV camera systems placed in convenience stores were shown to have decreased the number of robberies in those stores by more than 50% in the first year of operation. Overseas, the United Kingdom has had more CCTV camera systems in place than any other country, including the United States. Studies concerning their effectiveness have proven that crimes in areas like city centers, public housing, public transportation centers and car parks have decreased dramatically since their installation. That is resounding proof that CCTV camera systems are an effective tool in reducing criminal activity everywhere.

While CCTV camera systems can be effective tools for collecting evidence, they are limited by their inability to capture audio as well as video. Under federal law, if sound is recorded by CCTV camera systems along with video, it is considered to be the same as a wiretap, and therefore inadmissible in a court of law without the use of a warrant for the premises the system was installed in. In response, many police departments utilize skilled lip readers, and still gain an accurate deposition concerning incriminating spoken evidence.

CCTV camera systems are used all over the world in police investigations. In Canada, more than 70% of all bank robberies and other commercial crimes have been captured using CCTV camera systems. Anyone who regularly watches the local or national news has already learned just how effective CCTV camera systems can be when it comes to kidnapping and missing person cases. The evidence of their effectiveness just keeps growing.

The controversy stems from the fear of a Big Brother society coming into vogue. This cannot be further from the truth. Evidence collected for decades shows just how effective CCTV camera systems can be against crime. Besides protecting individual properties, they have the ability to insure that entire cities can be made safer by their use. To do without them would be madness.

Experience Movie Magic with Home Theaters

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , | Posted on 11:20 AM

The rising cost of movie and theater tickets means that a night out at the movies is becoming less affordable. With adult movie tickets costing up to $20, expensive parking costs and overpriced popcorn and drinks, a family of four can easily spend up to $150 for just two hours of entertainment that’s often accompanied by long lines and crowds, obstructed viewing, and audience members who like to talk.

The good news is that you can easily experience the magic of the movies, without breaking your budget, from the comfort of your own home with home theater installations complete with surround sound, a big plasma screen, and comfortable seating.

A good home theater has well-tiered seating, so that your family and guests can enjoy the picture without having to look over or around someone’s head. With your well-designed acoustics, soundproofing, and properly placed speakers, including subwoofers for deep bass effects, you’ll be immersed in the soundtrack and feel part of the action with your plasma screen providing three-dimensional vividness. And sound, lighting and ventilation are all easy to adjust with your well-integrated home automation system.

You’ve bought some microwave popcorn and soda from the local supermarket and you have this week’s release on Blu-Ray DVD. So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to head to the movies.

Enhance Your Business with An Audio Distribution System

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , , , , | Posted on 11:19 AM

An audio distribution system can mean the difference between a good experience at a restaurant or bar and a great one. Even when it’s just playing background music, a quality commercial sound system can improve the sense of ambience for customers and enhance your business’s image.

Mezuri Systems offers a range of sound, audio-visual, background music, public address and paging systems, and other communication solutions for all types of businesses, from offices, department stores and wedding venues to hotels, bars, entertainment complexes and even houses of worship.

Audio distribution systems use cutting-edge equipment and the latest computer software and CAD systems to ensure high performance, flexibility and ease of use. A good commercial audio distribution system functions well day in, day out, and is easy for the user to operate at the touch of a button. If an establishment such bar has a multi-zone system, then a bartender has control over all sections of the bar and is able to change tracks and adjust volume to set the mood as needed.

How Do Access Control Security Systems Work?

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , | Posted on 11:18 AM

Access control systems are an important security tool for businesses as they allow you to secure your premises through the use of code keypads and computerized cards, and even finger print, hand and facial recognition readers. With access card readers combined with CCTV security surveillance, your business can determine who entered a room, when and why.

Access control security systems provide you with complete control over your property. You can program cards so that only authorized people can access a building, parts of a building, or certain doors at certain time. The system means you can know where your employees are at all times, which contributes to greater accountability and risk reduction. You can also generate electronic access reports and conduct audits of all activity that takes place on the property.

Visitors can be easily managed through access control security systems. They can be issued temporary card readers that gives them access to only certain doors, in a certain timeframe. With access control security systems, doors can be programmed to lock or unlock automatically, which is particularly useful for entrance or lobby doors.

The iPad and Home Automation

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , , , | Posted on 1:49 PM

Apple's latest release, the iPad, will have a major impact and gain tremendous influence in the smart home control and home automation system market. With its very affordable price point, especially when compared with the manufacturer's touch screens, it serves as a flawlessly designed interface to a smart home system.

Most manufacturers in the home automation industry rely on small time or OEM vendors to design and manufacturer their tablet and touch screens. These screens are buggy, have design flaws and are generally very over-priced.

While some manufacturers like Crestron do have unique features (such as HD video) on their panels, the price points are just too high.

Manufacturers such as HAI already have their integration software on the market and here at Mezuri Systems we already tested it. Amazing! This is all besides all the other features that the iPad offers.

How to choose the right Smart Home Manufacturer

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , , | Posted on 10:08 AM

Smart Home Technologies (Home Automation), is a quickly advancing field with many established players in the field and many joining every day.

With the launch of the Ipod and now especially the Ipad, we will surely see a major increase in new homes being built with many smart technologies included.

The question is, which technology and manufacturer is the right one to choose? With established vendors like Crestron, Elan, Vantage, Control4, HAI, and many others, the choice is quite large, so how does one choose?

We at Mezuri Systems (www.mezurisystems.com) have long ago realized that playing on all levels is a very bad idea. It is impossible to keep up with all the vendors and their new products and as a result it is hard to offer our customers the right solutions.

Crestron is considered the pioneer in our industry and has been around the longest. Its product line is top-notch, very innovative and as a result very expensive.

Control4 is a very innovative (fairly) new vendor that has definitely reached critical market penetration and their products are IP based.

HAI is a manufacturer based in Louisiana and their product line is continually expanding. Their products work very well and are becoming serious alternatives to the more expensive systems from other manufacturers.

Many new companies enter the market with a big splash and then fizzle as spectacularly as they entered. I think back with a chuckle as I remember when at a trade show a new vendor had the biggest booth and made the most noise etc. I was having a discussion with another industry veteran and we had a bet as to how long the vendor would last. We both lost, since the vendor didn't survive the year...

To sum it up, it is important that your installation and integration company chooses a solid vendor and even more important that you choose a goo installation company.

Things to consider when hiring a low voltage integrator

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , | Posted on 6:59 PM

The following is a short list of things to take into consideration when hiring a low voltage integrator

1) Insurance: Does your provider have workers comp, liability, disability insurance? Do you know, that if a worker gets hurt on a job in your house and the company that he works for does not have insurance, your insurance policy is liable?

2) Knowledge: Many systems are very intricate and can only be fully enjoyed if your integrator has the knowledge and training to setup and program your installed systems correctly. Hiring a competent provider to clean up after a disastrous installation is normally more costly and not always successful.

3) Manufacturer support: Most manufacturers of high end custom electronics only honor warranties if their systems were installed by an authorized and trained installer. It is very sad to find out this fact after you need warranty repairs.

4) Documentation: Having a one man show installing a system might save money, but when service is needed and the documentation is nowhere to be found (and the installer now is in a different industry and ignoring the calls) it can become very tricky. Bringing in a competent provider at this point will cost significant money since tracing and backtracking is very labor intensive.

5) Timeliness: Hiring a one man team many times times means unfinished jobs, unable to reach the installer, and non-existent service.

At Mezuri Systems you do not need to worry about these things. Mezuri is licensed and insured, authorized and trained in all systems that we install, and meticulous about documentation.

Prewire for Distributed Audio Systems

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , | Posted on 9:21 AM

For all you do-it-yourself kind of people, here is a quick guide on how to prewire for a distributed audio system. Based on this method you should be able to install almost any system available on the market today, such as Nuvo, Russound, Niles, HAI, Proficient etc.

Step 1:
Choose a location from which all wiring will be run from. This is the location that will house your system, media server, tuners etc. You will need an AC outlet, good ventilation, a home run of two RG6 wires to the roof for the tuner antennas, and a connection to the internet for radio stations and album art etc.

Step2:
Run a Cat5e wire to each location where you will have a controller or a music keypad. If you want to have an intercom as well, run an additional Cat5e. Run a 16/4 high strand audio wire alongside, leave a service loop at the keypad area and then continue to the in wall or in ceiling locations of your speakers.

Step3:
Make sure to mark your wires, to avoid running alongside electrical high voltage wiring.

Voila, you should be prepared for the amazing experience of a distributed audio system.

Biometrics

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , , | Posted on 8:17 PM

Not many companies have biometric readers or access devices that act independently. Most biometric readers work as a validation device for a primary reader like a card reader or just a plain old code keypad.

At Mezuri we have the expertise in installing systems where the biometric reading device is the only controller for the door or entry. When a user presents their finger or their iris of their eye for validation an independent network verifies that the print or iris is allowed to be granted access to the the entry point and then sends a signal to the access controller to allow the user entry.

These systems are sophisticated and need experienced and authorized integrators like Mezuri Systems to ensure that the system is specified and installed correctly.

Cable and Satellite Wiring

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , | Posted on 1:16 AM

A TV antenna and/or DSS antenna and provision for DSS distribution throughout the home from the Communication closet is not just an alternative to CATV. The planning and installation should include provisions for DSS even though CATV is available. Many homeowners want either an alternative to CATV, or both CATV and DSS services. HDTV reception may also need to be considered. The DSS antenna may require one, two, or four RG-6 quad shielded cables to the Structured wiring panel, and from there to DSS receiver locations. Most RG-6 quad shield cables for video and TV distribution within the home use a copper clad steel core to provide optimum video signal performance and cable strength. But for the coaxial cable that connects the satellite antenna to the satellite receiver, many DSS manufacturers recommend solid copper core RG-6 quad shield because the cable must carry power (voltage switching) to switch LNBs at the antenna. Understanding the requirements for the installation are a must. Also, a telephone jack is required at each DSS receiver location. An off-air TV antenna may require one or two cables to structured wiring box and from there to TV locations. When planning external antennae or satellite dishes, make sure to take all necessary grounding, mounting, and lightning protection precautions that may be required in your region.

Camera Resolutions Myths and Realities

Posted by Blognut | Posted in , , | Posted on 1:51 PM

Understanding Video Quality

To some, video quality means high resolution, to others it means a faster frame-rate. By simulating the most common kind of events you’re trying to detect and recording them at different settings, you can quickly determine what’s best for you.

Frame-rate

Higher video frame-rates mean higher bitrates, which translates to the need for higher network bandwidth and more storage space. Three frames per second (FPS) is generally sufficient for everyday surveillance. Seven FPS picks up fine movement and is often used for alarm video. Fifteen is the next best thing to full-motion video, which is 30 FPS. It’s important to note that the consequence of moving from three to seven, or seven to 15, or 15 to 30 FPS is that your bit-rate increases by around 70 percent each time. That’s 70 percent more bandwidth and 70 percent more storage costs.

Resolution

Image size (which corresponds to resolution) is measured in terms of CIF. One of the greatest modern CCTV myths is that increasing the resolution and raising the frame-rate will automatically result in superior image quality. This is only true if the bit-rate available for the video is also raised accordingly. If the bit-rate is not raised, then the compression engine will severely compress the video – and 4CIF video can actually look worse than CIF video. When soliciting quotes for a project, make sure you understand any and all assumptions made by the supplier. Bosch always declares the conservative bit-rates used, and from this you are assured high-quality video, even under stressful conditions like low-light (high Automatic Gain Control) and busy scene activity or PTZ motion.

Compression Algorithms

Uncompressed digital video is unusable for CCTV because it uses over 200 Mbps. Many different compression standards exist, but for CCTV, they fall into three broad categories: JPEG, Wavelet, and MPEG. JPEG and Wavelet are both very efficient at low frame-rates, but only JPEGs are interoperable between different manufacturers. However, they both use up to six times more bandwidth than MPEG-4 at higher frame-rates. Most modern CCTV systems are based on MPEG-4, which is an excellent compromise of video quality and bandwidth demands – and significantly more efficient than its broadcast quality predecessor, MPEG-2.

Excellent Compromise

CIF Resolution

4CIF Full D1

Width x Height (pixels)

352 x 240

704 x 240

704 x 480

It is important to note the Frame per Second rate (fps rate) in regards to DVR claims. So for example a DVR that does full D1 on each channel at 30 fps is not the same as a DVR that claims to do Full D1, since it may be Full D1 for all cameras combines at 30fps.
